Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
A common language for difference.
About the instrument
MBTI describes preference across four pairs: where attention is directed, how information is taken in, how decisions are reached, and how the outside world is approached. It reports preference, not ability, and not performance. Nobody is better because of their type.
Its strength is accessibility. It gives mixed groups a shared, non-threatening vocabulary for difference quickly, which is often the necessary first step before harder conversations become possible. We use it where that shared language is the goal, and reach for other instruments where prediction or selection is the goal.
Why you might choose it
We only recommend an instrument where it earns its place. These are the situations where this one usually does.
- You need a team to understand each other quickly and without defensiveness.
- You are running a development programme and want an accessible entry point.
- Differences in working style are being read as differences in commitment.
- You want a foundation to build more targeted work on later.
